WINDSCAPE

Wind 风 is formless and invisible. Wind moves through branches, strikes surfaces, carries memory. In this installation, theatrical designers from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale are creating a space 景 that invites the audience to witness the cyclical rhythm of wind across generations. Visitors experience the evolution of the Chinese language across time as it is written and spoken, transferring movement, breath, history, and individual recollections. Wind travels, wind blows, and wind brings us to the next moment. What do we hear, feel, and remember when entering 风・景 Windscape?

We started by talking about wind: something invisible that we only understand through other things.

We hear it through sound, see it through movement, and feel it through silence.

Together, we built a large installation with wind chimes, strings, gears, and fans. As the handle moved, the strings tightened or loosened, triggering sound, light, movement, or complete stillness.

Through the project, we talked about wind, silence, memory, and home.

I'm really grateful I got to make this project during my first summer in the U.S. As an international student, I was thinking a lot about identity, language, belonging, and my relationship with home. This process gave me a chance to reconnect with Chinese culture in a way that felt personal and honest. I think this was the first time I truly realized how important our identities are as artists.

Thank you to everyone who was part of this process, for helping us hear the wind, see the wind.
